Detective Michael Rayburn has been with the Mesa Police Department for the past 18 years. He started his career in the patrol division after graduating from the academy and stayed in patrol for the first 7 years of his career. During which he worked various districts and shifts but predominantly worked swings and graveyards on the west side of the Mesa. In 2008, Michael transferred to the Criminal Investigations Unit in the Central District. He was assigned to the night squad and initially handled a caseload of property crimes. Working nights allowed Michael to gain experience investigating violent crimes. After a few years he was assigned a caseload of primarily violent crimes with an emphasis on robbery.
In September of 2014, Michael transferred to the Homicide Unit where he currently remains. He typically is assigned active homicides, officer involved shootings, child deaths, and suicides. In addition to handling active cases, Michael investigates and has filed charges on unsolved cold case homicides. Michael created the current death investigations course taught at the Mesa Police Department basic academy where he is an instructor. Michael has also guest spoke at several local law enforcement education programs in the east valley including classes at Chandler-Gilbert Community College.
Michael has a bachelor’s degree in education with an emphasis on Law Enforcement Technology. He has completed a criminal investigators course through the Maricopa Community Colleges along with courses in homicide investigation, blood spatter interpretation, forensic interviewing, Force Science, and digital video analysis and retrieval.
Det. Rayburn has been a member of AHIA since 2014.
