Stephen Palmer, a native of Arizona, is a Detective Sergeant with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office and is currently assigned to the Major Crimes Division, Homicide Unit. Stephen was sworn in as a Deputy Sheriff, for the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, in July of 2007 and then worked for a short period in Court Security Division. Stephen’s next assignment was in the Patrol Division and worked patrol duties in District III (northwest Maricopa County), District IV (north Maricopa County) and District VII (Fountain Hills). He was assigned to District IV Detectives after being requested by numerous command staff due to his investigative intuition. Stephen was later transferred to District VII Detectives during a resurgence to identify and capture the “Rock Burglar”. After being a District Detective, Stephen was requested by Command Staff of the Special Victim’s Unit to be transferred to their unit at the Major Crimes Division. He worked as an SVU Detective for just over two years before being requested by the Homicide Unit to join their ranks. Stephen was promoted to the rank of Sergeant after 4.5 years and was transferred to the Headquarters building where he assisted with legal compliance. As of 2018, Stephen is happily back with the Homicide Unit, this time as a Detective Sergeant. Before being sworn in as a Deputy Sheriff, Stephen was enlisted for 8 years active duty in the U.S. Army as a Military Policeman. Besides graduating from Basic Training, Stephen also completed and graduated from the Military Police Academy, Corrections Course and the Primary Leadership Development Course (PLDC). Of the eight years in the Army, Stephen was a Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO/Sergeant) for almost five of those years and has been on multiple deployments worldwide to include Panama, Cuba and Korea. He was awarded numerous awards by the U.S. Government as well as several awards from foreign governments. Stephen has had numerous amounts on training in the fields of Leadership, Military Tactics, and Criminal Investigations. He has additional training in Phlebotomy and was a Field Training Officer before being assigned as a Detective. Stephen is also assigned to the Arizona Child Abduction Response Team (AZCART) which he assists other agencies with investigating missing/abducted children and is part of training outlying agencies about the team. He is currently a Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office Academy instructor in the areas of Laws of Arrest, Rules of Evidence, Death Investigations, Crime Scene Responsibilities and Physical Evidence Procedures for the basic recruit academy. In addition, he teaches Death Investigation’s and Crime Scene Management at the Detective Certification level as well as Detention Supervisors. Stephen has been asked to give numerous lectures at Arizona State University and Phoenix College regarding homicide investigations and other major crimes. He is an active member of numerous organizations such as the American Legion, Veterans Foreign Wars, the Arizona Homicide Investigators Association, Arizona Child Abduction Response Team and Emerald Society. He is an avid student of world history and law enforcement investigations.
